VI Early Music Morellavolver

With the entry in 1443 of Alfonso of Aragon, the Magnanimous (1396-1458), as the king of the two Sicilies, Naples becomes the heart of the Mediterranean, and the Aragonese court turns in its most powerful ruler. The humanist crown of Aragon was distinguished by a very refined artistic taste retaining its own identity, but at the same time appreciating the local traditions and practices.

From the late thirteenth century to the middle of the fifteenth century, the Aragonese kings undertook an ambitious expansion policy for the Mediterranean, conquering Sicily, Corsica and Sardinia, among other further afield territories such as the duchies of Athens and Neopatria. This political and military expansion in the Mediterranean was accompanied by an extraordinary peak in the international trade. The period of maximum splendor economic ended with the mid-fourteenth century crisis, where Valencia replaced Barcelona as the main commercial port of the Crown, helped by the resulting trade from the Mediterranean expansion of Islam, becoming Valencia to the city of the Spanish trade. The capture of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453 marked the beginning of the commercial decline of the Mediterranean, off the North Sea routes, and soon, also against the new Atlantic routes from the discoveries in America.

This musical adventure is formed by the measurement, the theory and composition techniques from the fifteenth century, the beginnings of white notation, the Montecassino codex, instrumental or religious musics alongside the villanellas, frottolas, madrigals and villancicos, not forgetting the traditional music from all sides of the Mediterranean, so necessary to understand the cultural complexity that characterizes the people of this Mare Nostrum, fostering a necessary environment of dialogue.

The combination of the elements of the historical music along with the oral tradition, form the essence of Early Music Morella. In the 6th edition, in addition to the Early Music Festival and Academy, the audience can enjoy a multitude of parallel activities (guided tours, exhibitions, conferences, Dada Med_Ren jam sessions, workshops ...). It will be a pleasure to share it with all of you.
